I started with three hosts with 1 socket quad core, then 2 socket quad core, now a 2 socket hex core. Sounds like my next upgrade is going to be 2 socket 8 (maybe 10 core) cores and 196gb ram. Nice that my essentials license has "grown" with me. I wish there was an economical path to HA/Vsan, but at $2500 per socket and going from Essentials to E-Plus, pricing is way beyond what I can afford as an SMB.

A. No. The new vSphere licensing model applies only to new purchases of vSphere licenses or to existing licenses of vSphere 4.x or older that are version upgraded to vSphere 5.x or vSphere 6.x.
