Thanks for the response. But you have to realize that all these programs are foreign too me so some of the things you have written don't make sense. I will explain in between questions. First thing is to create a VM, so which program do you recommend to do this. I have Disk2vhd and Hyper V that I have already tried, will one of those work? Second you say create a VMDK descriptorfile for the old hard drive, do you mean the new virtual drive that I made from the old hard drive?  Again, which program do I use for that step?  My interpretation of  the sequence is create a VM, create a VMDK descriptorfile and assign it to the VM I created. Then run configure machine in VMware Converter on the vm I created and assigned the descriptor file to. Which happens to be a vmx-file, is that important to what I am trying to do or information I really don't need? Just trying to keep it simple. Then activate windows. I assume this is because Windows detected the software in a new environment and will give me a message or just plain won't work or what? I have had to do this in the past when I built a new machine, will I be able to use the same license key or will I have to purchase another one? I'm going to create the new vm from my old hard drive with Disk2vhd tonight and wait for answers. Hopefully I can get this close to finished tomorrow without too many more questions. Thanks in advance for your patience and valuable help. RJ
